Fortaleza as a base

The city beaches

Praia do Futuro is the long city beach, better known for its barracas than for teaching. It sees wind, but it is an urban beach with swimmers and structures — not where a first lesson belongs.

Cumbuco — 30 km northwest

The nearest real kite village, well under an hour away, with an ocean beach and the flat water of Lagoa do Cauípe. This is where most Fortaleza arrivals go to learn.

Taíba and Paracuru — 1 to 1.5 hours

Further west along the same coast, quieter than Cumbuco and popular for downwind runs.

Flying in

Pinto Martins (FOR) is the international gateway. Schools further west — Preá, Jericoacoara — are a longer transfer, commonly 4 to 6 hours by road.

Should you learn in Fortaleza itself?

Usually not on the city beach. Fortaleza is where you land, change money and sleep; the teaching happens at the kite villages along the coast, where there is space, steady side-onshore wind and, at Cumbuco, flat lagoon water. Can you kitesurf in Fortaleza itself?

There is wind on the city beaches, but Praia do Futuro is an urban beach with swimmers and barraca structures. Riders and schools overwhelmingly use the kite villages west of the city, starting with Cumbuco about 30 km away.

Where do most people go from Fortaleza?
